On Tuesday, November 5, 1957, His Imperial Majesty inaugurated at the
Maichew Square Power Station in Addis Ababa a new steam generating
plant. Speaking on the occasion He said:
"Electricity is one of the
indispensable factors for industrial development, in the betterment of the
standard of living of the people and generally for the economic progress of any
nation.
Waterfalls are among the natural
resources of Ethiopia, plans being now studied for several projects in the
development of hydro-electric power.
It gives Us pleasure to see the new
steam turbine. With well prepared electricity that would boost the city's
electric supply until the proposed hydro-electric power installation is
completed, and which would be used as a reserve in case of any power shortage
even then.
The Board of Directors of the Electric
Light and Power Authority and its administrative staff should keep constantly
before their mind the necessity to provide electric power on the largest
possible scale.
The effort that you have made in
installing this steam turbine that We are about to inaugurate should be
commended, for which We thank you sincerely."
